Grade 6 My name is Ariella Brunwasser and I’m so excited to be your child’s teacher this year.  I am now in the second year of my graduate work at Harvard Divinity School for a Master’s of Theological Studies.  I am training to be a high school English teacher who incorporates themes of religion into the study of literature.  This year at religious school, I will be helping my class strengthen their knowledge of the Hebrew language by building skills in reading, writing, and speaking. The students will be expanding their vocabulary throughout the year, and will become more comfortable reading different Hebrew texts.   In addition, we will be studying narratives from the Bible and learning to apply these lessons to our own contemporary context. Recently we discussed the rivalry between Jacob and his brother Esau as an archetype for the dos and don’ts of conflict resolution.  Our textbook will help us apply the timeless wisdom of the Torah to our daily lives in our striving to become better friends, neighbors, and citizens.

This year we will be taking part in the B’nai TELEM program, subsidized by the Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC).  This important curriculum provides young adults with service learning opportunities centering on issues of social justice. The program will combine classroom time for interactive discussions and reflections with field trips to service sites in the Boston area that will be taking place on several Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons throughout the year.  You will receive a schedule of field visits very soon.  In addition to this curriculum, we engage in weekly Jewish singing sessions with Daniel, our music teacher, and twice monthly prayer sessions with Rabbi Vogel.  If you have any questions or would just like to chat, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to e-mail me at arielladevora@gmail.com .
